What is a Missionary Kid?

What is a missionary kid?MK. That’s “missionary kid” for those you who don’t know. And if you really want to be up on things, it’s now TCK—”third culture kid”. I know, sounds like a sci-fi cartoon. And so goes the discombobulated plot of the modern missionary kid, a citizen of a country they rarely see, a resident of country they’re not from, shaped by divergent cultures, multiple languages, numerous homes, and constant goodbyes. Did you have cats and dogs growing up? They had monkeys and chameleons. Remember your first trip to a museum? They could see the pyramids from their back porch. Exciting lives indeed, but often misunderstood, and always far from home. Here is one of their stories…

The son and daughter finally got their chance to go to the mountains with their dad. So many times he had come home and scooped them up after a long excursion. He was always unshaven and unshowered, but they didn’t mind. They knew it meant time for tales of baboons and wolves, cliffs and trails, joys and sorrows.

When he told them that they were riding shotgun on the next trip up, they couldn’t sleep for excitement. A short-term team of volunteers was coming. The boy and girl would hike, camp, and labor right alongside them. So they prepared like everyone else, memorizing the story of God’s salvation from the creation of the world to the resurrection of Jesus. It took a really long time.

Everyone loved their candidness and cuteness, stuffed into the truck and layered up for the chill of 10,000 feet. Not once did they need scolding. In fact, it was they who did much of the telling. Like Andrew the apostle, they grabbed the hands of locals and brought them to Jesus—with the help of a translator, of course.

They told the story with the wonder of a child and the confidence of a herald. Of the dozens of people who experienced God tangibly that week, there was none more awed than the missionary. His two little preachers were mighty in word and deed.

“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,  ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”

Matthew 21:16
